Jul. 20th, 2011 10:06 amI think the problem is that there is a huge difference in the world views of the German people and their political class.
The German political elite are still fixated with war guilt and are determined to prove that they are not little nazis bent on world domination.
The German people, on the other hand, are a little less obsessed with the past. While very few Germans still think Drang Nach Osten is a desirable national policy most were not even born in 1945 and they don't see why they have to keep beating themselves up for the sins of their great grandparents. Especially when that endless self-flagellation seems to involve nothing but spending huge amounts of cash to save a bunch of lazy, corrupt, ungrateful wasters from the consequences of their own stupidity and greed.
